Wonder Woman (2017)
This movie, since the time of its announcement after the titular character's debut in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, has been quite anticipated. We all know superhero movies are the hottest cookie on the pan right now. With huge studios and millions of fans, everyone seems to try to get behind one of them. So when Gal Gadot was cast as main lead, people freaked out. As the fine young woman had previously been known mostly for her modeling, many called her the new Megan Fox, being cast just for her looks. Raising questions like: is it really important for Wonder Woman to be super hot? Would it not be better to cast someone who is, well, an actress?
But Gal Gadot clearly triumphed over all the haters and skeptics by rocking the performance brilliantly, both as an actor and the embodiment of Wonder Woman. I can't even imagine the character looking any differently by this point. And the most beautiful part was that she did not look overtly sexualized as the character often does in comics and animations. Her armor was rather... small. But besides that, it was nice to see the character in a solo movie truly focusing on her development minute by minute.
I have come to the part where we talk about the movie itself. Over all light adventure/fantasy mix with heroism and some touching moments with some humor sprinkled throughout. One of those movies you can go see with anyone, regardless of whether it is your friends, or a date, or just some casual family night. The movie has a classic plot; a hero sees injustice in the world and they must correct it. I would not say it was the best movie in the world or that it was unpredictable. But it was generally done well. A crowd pleaser, as I call them.
But in this time and day, DC Comics and Marvel Comics have followings that might as well put some religions to shame. They seem to toss out one movie after another trying to sway some fans over to one side or the other. Until now I always had this feeling DC is staying to a lighter content. Single stories, not mixing their characters up too much, while Marvel was truly building the world around their characters. And influence could be seen through them giving something truly special for fans to look forward. Now I can truly say that this movie has created a very great weapon in DC's arsenal. I can already see all of us rooting for Wonder Woman in the upcoming Justice League movie.
Lastly, let's talk about the bad things. I had a feeling that 2 hours, 21 minutes is a bit too much for a light content adventure movie. A person can be entertained only by that many action sequences in 141-minute time window. There were some scenes that seemed utterly pointless and even more than that, bothersome. But I'll let everyone be the judge of that themselves. I give Wonder Woman (2017) a 74 out of 100 and I must say for me that is a very high score. Truly above average.

The Mummy (2017)
Fans of the original 1999 film may not be too excited to see this modern reboot starring the ever-smiling Tom Cruise in place of the original movie's lead and trademark face Brendan Fraser. If that is not enough of a spit in the face to the audience, guess what? The horrific mummy that gave small children nightmares and put us on the edge of our seats when our heroes were running for their lives is replaced by... yeah, you guessed it, a hot chick that is partially decomposed throughout the movie. But never fear, there is a plan! Seemingly out of nowhere Russel Crowe's character appears and to everyone's disappointment, he is not Maximus. This time he plays the role of Dr. Henry Jekyll, who apparently fights against evil now. Seriously writers, maybe someone should read the script before you give the movie a stamp of approval?
The most disappointing part might be the characters. The only one you are able to remotely relate to is the Mummy herself. This kind of writing, when there is so much money backing it up, is disappointing to see. Honestly, many people here on Guilty Pleasures could have done a better job with their eyes closed. The characters have no reason or motivation for their actions. It is all just a series of events driven by no logic. The characters continuously break their roles and then go back to them as if the writers had no idea what to do with them.
If you have passed on all of the Storage Wars episodes on the Discovery Channel and absolutely need a badly produced action movie that shares the name of the movie you moderately liked almost two decades ago, then maybe this is the movie is for you. Arm yourself with some ignorance when it comes to detail or you will be left saying, "Really? Well, that is impossibly stupid even if magic is real!" Abandon any hope that you might like something about this movie and I guarantee you will find it amazing! Just like one of those reality shows you watch with horror in your heart and a question on your lips: "How can this get any worse?!"
I give The Mummy (2017) 21 out of 100. I honestly might have given it more if the movie didn't have about hundred shameless references to the original. Guys, please leave the original alone. You don't have to remind us--we know there was a better movie with the same name! And I don't know about you lovely people reading this, but if I had to choose between a hot, magical immortal princess who wants to make me her king and give me immortality and godlike power or a blond chick who thinks she is the center of the world... well, it's pretty obvious. Movie over in 15 minutes and I rule the modern world as the new death god.
